Inspired by my home-brew loving comrades, I observed them toting their fermented wonder to social gatherings in trendy, wooden, six-shot crates. The experience is always delightful, tasting new brews and ogling over these transportation devices. I decided to craft my own industrial beer caddy. I hope you appreciate the practicality! Primitive Tealight Centerpiece
I decided to try something new – no measuring and no plan. Well, almost no plan. A warped oak board and an oddly shaped piece of cherry turned into a primitive looking tealight centerpiece! Continue reading “Primitive Tealight Centerpiece”
Rustic Cherry Napkin Holder
I don’t know how many times I teased Jill that I would make a napkin holder. You know, the dorky kind some of us made in middle school woodshop? Turns out that we needed one and I wanted to put a different spin on it.
Sentiero DiShay Trail: Sojourn in the Rain
So many complain, but I’ve learned to embrace the elements – hot or cold, wet or dry. I recently had the pleasure of sojourning in the rain on the Sentiero DiShay Trail with a good friend of mine. The trail is a 13.2 mile, relatively easy loop located in the northern reaches of Tiadaghton State Forest. The weather and the company made this outing memorable. Plus, it’s always fun getting someone interested in backpacking!

Oak Sphere
Since my last project, I had circles on my mind and I’ve been intrigued with making round things without a lathe. Soon, I began researching how to make a wooden ball. I found many methods and tried a few. Some resulted in disaster, but I pulled it off. Challenge complete – an oak sphere!
Wooden Bracelet in Oak
One day while organizing my shop, I happened upon my circle cutter – a rather unruly looking device. It reminded me of watching YouTube videos of people making wooden jewelry such as rings and the like. Given the capacity of the tool, I decided to make a bracelet. Read on to hear of my mishaps and see this thing in action!
Pinchot Trail Redux: Corridors of Existence
Taking advantage of a couple mild days, I decided to return to Pinchot Trail for an overnight backpacking trip. The north loop was the plan, but I chose to be a little more adventurous and include a couple new trails and a vista. Along the way I contemplated the metaphorical meaning of the path I was traveling – the corridors of existence. Tag along for the adventure and give me a moment to explain!

Second Personal Perspective
When I was a younger, I could have summed my ethics and values in a few short sentences. I saw the world in black and white. I saw the world filtered through the dogma that was bestowed upon me. Life experience challenged those principles on many occasions and life continues to challenge my values and ethics today. Change is inevitable. Through the years, I found a tendency to see the world more clearly through shades of grey. With that said, I’ve found more questions than answers. Continue reading “Second Personal Perspective”
Old Knowledge
I turned on my drill press and the machine hummed but did not move. Obviously something was wrong, but what? A quick Google search of the symptoms pointed me towards a faulty motor starting capacitor. With a few tools and multimeter in hand, I was able to quickly diagnose the problem and confirm the capacitor was indeed the defective part. Within a few days, my Amazon order arrived and I repaired my drill press. I am lucky to have a working knowledge of electronics. Who would have known that a fifth grade hobby would reward me again?
Craftsman Picture Frame
I had to make my own frame for my college certificates. What self respecting woodworker wouldn’t? I decided on a craftsman picture frame, a style that intrigued Jill and me for several years. After mounting it on the wall, I was surprised how large the frame looks. What better way to acknowledge a hard earned accomplishment? If you are interested, follow along to see how I built this project!
