I wished to give something special to my friends on their wedding day. Using inspiration from my last candle holder project, I found the perfect idea and crafted a set of tealight holders that can be used together or separately. I was absolutely delighted when I heard they love them!
Lately, I’ve been having a great time exploring the rustic and industrial styles. It’s been fun preserving the original form of selected materials and highlighting their character. The lack of planning has also been an exhilarating experience. This project was not going to be any different!
I wanted to create something for my friends. At first, I didn’t know what. I putzed around with the idea of a keep sake box or a picture frame. These projects just didn’t feel right. I wandered into my workshop and picked up a cherry log. I have a few of these small logs that are of irregular shape and have multiple splits. For a while, I didn’t know what to do with them. For several minutes, I looked them over mindfully, trying to see a project in them.
For whatever reason, I decided to cut the largest log in half. I liked the matching pieces and thought they could be two separate somethings. I hit the flat surface with a sander and clarified the beauty. It reminded me of a previous project and that’s how I decided to make these candle holders for my friends.
I love how this set turned out and it was hard giving them away. A few days after the wedding, the bride told me how much they loved them. I was so happy to hear this! Although I didn’t exercise my fancy joinery techniques, my woodworking skill was still put to the test. Holding back my own influence and promoting the natural characteristic of the materials turned this project into art.
